My daughter can bust a move. She used to make us play one particular CD over and over and had a slightly different dance routine to each song. Some had their own hand motions (Itsy Bitsy Spider) while others were entirely her own. Who knew you could dance to the ABC song?
Dancing to music is one way my daughter stays moving. In the summer time it’s so hot and buggy (yes, buggy – mosquitos are terrible here), I have to be creative in the ways that keep her physically active. Like most 2-year olds, she has an abundance of energy that needs to be channeled appropriately and instead of destroying the house with her many toys, I prefer to put on some music and have her dance around the house with me. The are so many benefits of dance. It encourages creativity, promotes fitness and helps our children develop emotionally and socially. Now I fully admit there are days we where I have so much to do that cartoons occupy most of her morning. We’re big fans of PBS in this household and one of the things that I appreciate is that in between shows, they encourage kids to get up and move.
PBS and Curious George are hosting a fun contest that everyone can participate in. Parents and guardians are invited to enter a video of their child dancing to the Curious George theme song for a chance to be featured on a Curious George DVD. How cool would that be? Additionally, they may even win a visit from Curious George himself. The video submissions will be reviewed by a panel of judges who will pick 10 finalists. This is a great chance to let your child’s enthusiasm, creativity and originality shine through! This contest ends April 2, 2012 so hurry up and get your video submission ready.
What kind of dance does your child like to do? My daughter’s moves usually include twirling around in a circle until she’s dizzy or swaying back and forth while clapping her hands. Just recently she’s attempted to do somersaults but so far, she hasn’t made it completely over. I can’t wait to see what she comes up with for this contest.
