Feeling Secure With Walgreens Prescription Savings Club #rxsavingsclub

Not having health or prescription coverage is a scary thing.  For the majority of my adult life, I’ve worked in the healthcare field so not only did I have pretty good health insurance but I also had access to physicians.  So in February of this year when my husband lost his job, the first thought that came to my mind was how were we going to pay for health and prescription drug coverage.

A while back I had learned about the Walgreens Prescription Savings Club and remembered thinking to myself it was a pretty cool program, little did I know how familiar I would become with it.  When our insurance finally ran out in June, we were able to purchase a short-term medical insurance policy.  However, in order for the policy to be cost-effective, we had to buy a bare bones policy.  High deductible, no maternity coverage and no prescription drug coverage.  The first two things I can deal with.  We’re rarely sick and there are no plans on having any babies at this time but no prescription drugs?  That scared me.

I did some research online and discovered that for only $35/year I could enroll my entire family in this program, including my dogs!  My step-son has chronic allergies and asthma so we were happy to learn that we could get some of his medications as a discounted price.   As a member of the savings club, we could get discounts on thousands and brand name and generic medications.  And because Walgreens is a nationally known company, I wouldn’t have to worry about my step-son living in Oklahoma or that we’ll be moving next month.  My coverage would be nationwide, where ever there is a Walgreens pharmacy.

I decided to take a trip to my local Walgreens (see my full shopping trip in my Google+ album and the one thing I found that shocked me) and sign up for the Prescription Savings Club.  I headed to pharmacy and waited my turn in line.  The pharmacy tech who helped me was very friendly and because I had used Walgreens pharmacy in the past, she was able to locate myself, my step-son and even one of my dogs in the database.  The whole process of signing up took about 10 minutes.

The important thing to remember about the Walgreens Prescription Savings Club is it is not insurance or an insurance benefit, nor is it intended as a substitute for insurance.  Also, if you’re receiving benefits from a federal or state health care program, such as Medicare or Medicaid, you are ineligible for this savings program.  For me, this is an inexpensive way for me to get a discount on prescriptions since we currently do not have prescription coverage.  And if we obtain that coverage in the future, this plan will still cover my dogs (who seem to each do a course of prednisone every year) because I’m pretty sure no matter how hard I try, they will never be considered legal dependents. :)

  1. I never knew about that, but it sounds like a great option. Thanks for sharing, Sarah!

  2. I just signed my family up last week and good thing I did. My husband came home with 4 prescriptions yesterday that he needed filled. I sent him to Walgreens with our temp card and he was only charge $45 dollars for all 4 prescriptions. Normally he would spend over $100 easily. This is a great plan and I highly recommend it.

  3. Oh wow, that’s awesome!
