Improve Your Knife Skills with Chicago Cutlery

Without a doubt, one of the keys to be a successful cook in the kitchen is having the proper tools! I remember the first time I made peanut butter toffee turtle cookies.  Because I didn’t have any pancake mix on hand, I decided to make a substitute recipe I found online. Well, one of the the things they recommended you do was use a pastry blender to work the shortening into the dry mix.  Not having one on hand, I decided to use two butter knives.  Let’s just say it took me a LOT longer than I would have liked and for Christmas, I asked Santa for a pastry blender. That same principle is true when it comes to knives.  Not every home cook needs a full set, but having the right knives makes all the difference.

I’ve been using my Chicago Cutlery DesignPro™ knives for about three weeks and so far, I’m pretty happy with them!  Because I work full-time, the weekends are when I do a lot of food prep for the week.  That means cleaning and cutting up my daughter’s fruits and veggies.  Remember my struggles with cutting cantaloupe?  Well, now that I’m choosing the right size knife, cutting up large pieces of fruit is much easier.  No more peeling that thing like an apple!  Onions no longer scare me either.  I just karate chop that baby in half and use what I need.

And because the temperatures are cooler, that means using my oven again to cook meals! Just the other night we decided to make pita bread pizzas. For the most party they are quick and easy to make but the one thing that would usually hang me up was chopping all the vegetables.  With my DesignPro knife and its super sharp, Japanese steel blade, this time chopping was quick and easy. In a matter of minutes, I had all my ingredients for the pizzas ready to go.

If you’re ready to improve your knife skills then you’ll be excited to know that East9thStreet is giving away a Chicago Cutlery DesignPro Chef Knife (retail value of $34)! This giveaway is for US residents only.  Just enter on the Rafflecopter form below!

  1. My husband is a kitchen disaster story lol… just kidding. Last thanksgiving after preparing the meal mostly the day ahead, we went to the macy’s parade, my mother in law came down and popped everything in the oven while we were away… we enjoyed a nice meal for 9 and as soon as (and I mean literally as soon as…) the last person put there fork down, the entire table collapsed… nobody was hurt, and the only thing broken was my heart and a few wine glasses… I just thank god that it wasn’t while all the food was on it :)

    • OMgosh! After the shock of it all (and making sure no one was hurt), I think I would have burst out laughing. That’s something that only happens in the movies!

  2. I have hundreds of really bad cutting tales. But these knives look really snazzy!

Oh no, I was just thinking of this! I was very young, newly out on my own. I decided to wow the family by bringing over a homemade pie from my very own kitchen, made completely from scratch, even the crust. OMG! By the time I was finished the crust was tough in places, doughy in others, nearly black around the edges, and the apples were still raw crisp. And the mess! That was some 30 years ago, and I’ll bet there is still flour in the nooks and crannies of that old apartment. I did continue to make pies, but I didn’t try another homemade crust for about 15 years–Haha!

    • That’s when you run to the grocery store, buy a pie from the bakery and slip it in your pie dish & hope no one figures out your secret. Great story!

I was taking pasta from the stove to the table when I dropped the whole pot in the floor it went everywhere thankfully I did not have any kids any there at the time this happened and I had sneakers on.

  5. My first Thanksgiving I cooked my turkey for 12 hours and it was still RAW! I forced everyone to eat it anyway. Thank God nobody got sick!

  6. Cheryl Abdelnour says:

When we first got our microwave we cooked something covered by plastic wrap. When I took the wrap off I burned my fingers real bad, I went to bed with my hand in a bowl of water and ice.

  7. Colleen Maurina says:

My kitchen disasters happen in our outside “kitchen” gas BBQ because my husband uses my good pans and bakeware on the BBQ and ruins them!

  8. Rachael Henzman says:

One day, me and my boyfriend burnt our pizza into a blackened shrunken Frisbee lol Thanks for the giveaway!

    • Haha, did you dip it in ranch dressing and eat it anyway? Because yes (hangs head in shame), I have eaten burnt pizza that way….

  9. Debbie Jackson says:

I went to church and left the lunch on high…………fire trucks!!

  10. The very first turkey I cooked for thanksgiving I left the insides in.

    • Ha! I’ve done that too!! But now that I know they are in there, it grosses me out and I’ll only eat turkeys I don’t make. ;)

  11. Sandy VanHoey says:

My kitchen disaster story was when my father one year, came by the house and decided he’d help me. He took the roaster pan out of the oven to make the gravy for our turkey, I had just taken the turkey out of the roaster and when he did, he dropped it and needless to say, we had no gravy that year with our Thanksgiving dinner.
