There are many classic scenes in ET The Extra-Terrestrial but for me, one of the best is the bicycle scene where Elliot and his friends are running for the police officers. Just as they think they’ve escaped, they run into a road block, sure to be caught and then all of a sudden, they’re airborne. As an 8-year old child, I vividly remember seeing this movie for the first time. It’s been decades (yikes!) since the last time I saw it and now I’m happy that I can share it with my family since E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial was released on Blu-ray™ combo pack, DVD, Digital Copy and UltraViolet™ (whew, that was a mouthful) on October 9, 2012.
In 1982 (if you did the math, you now know how old I am), E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial was the biggest movie of the year, ranking #1 for over 16 different weekends. Even today, it remains the fourth most successful movie of all time in the US. The film was nominated for 9 Academy Awards and came home with statuettes in the Best Visual Effects, Best Sound Effects Editing, Best Sound and Best Music categories. As a little girl I remember wanting to be just like Drew Barrymore’s character, Gertie, with the pig tails and everything.
Like all anniversary releases, this Blu-ray anniversary edition contains a ton of extras features such as
- The E.T. Journals: In this all-new bonus feature, retrace the day-to-day experience of creating E.T from never-before-seen, behind-the-scenes footage shot by Academy Award®-winning cinematographer John Toll. This piece will give viewers a unique feeling of being on the set and living the excitement of what it was like to make E.T.
- Steven Spielberg & E.T.: Watch an all-new interview with Steven Spielberg, as he reflects back on the film and discusses his experience working with the actors, as well as his overall and current perspective on E.T.
- Deleted Scenes: Two scenes from the 2002 version of the film. I didn’t even know there was a 2002 version!
- The E.T. Reunion: See the cast and filmmaker reunite to talk about their thoughts on the impact of the film.
During our next family movie night, my movie of choice will be E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. I hope my daughter loves it just as much as I did as a child. And yes, we’re going to try out some of those out-of-the world recipes! Stay tuned….

I loved the movie E.T. and yes, that bicycle scene is one of my favorites from the movie as well!
I’ll have to add this to the list of Christmas gifts when someone asks what to get for my daughter! I think she’ll love it, too!
By the way, according to the year you said the movie came out, I was 4 years older than you…but we won’t do the math on that one either!
This was such a classic when I was a kid! I was only 1 when it came out, but it’s still a childhood movie for me
This is truly a classic! I have not seen this movie in so long! Thanks for sharing!
