Potty Training Tips and Pull-Ups Potty Break

If you’ve been a reader of my blog for a while, you’ve read about my challenges with potty training.  First, there was the who issue with BOTH of us being ready for potty training and the signs that easily told us we were not up for the challenge.  Then, once my daughter started going #1 in the potty all I wished for was that #2 would soon follow.  I’m now happy to say that she’ll at least attempt to do all of her business in the toilet and we’re having less and less accidents each week.  For parents getting ready to go through this next stage of growing up, here are some potty training tips to help you make it through.

Most of my daughter’s accidents happen when she’s engaged in play.  She’s so engrossed in whatever she’s doing, she either waits until the last minute to tell me she has to go potty and she has an accident or she doesn’t even tell me and keeps on playing after the accident!  One of the tricks I’ve incorporated is the potty break!  My daughter is a huge fan of Disney, especially Minnie Mouse so I downloaded the Minne Mouse Potty Break Timer for my Mac.  Not only is it a reminder for her but for me as well!  I can set the time for up to 60 minutes and ask her if she’s ready to go.  It’s really helped with reducing her accidents!  She’ll even tell me when the timer goes off that she doesn’t have to go potty.

Another fun tool that Pull-ups has on their Potty Break site is the ability for your child to get a phone call from either Mater or Cinderella.  All you have to do is go to The Potty Break website and schedule your call.  It’s as easy as choosing your character, selecting the date and time of the call and entering your phone number and email address.  I scheduled a call from Mater & Cinderella and both were right on time!

Whatever you do, make potty training an enjoyable experience for your child.  The best advice I ever received when it came to potty training was to be patient and quit comparing my daughter to everyone else.  Now when my daughter goes potty on the toilet, she gets a big smile on her face and tells me, “it makes you sooo happy!”  Yes, she’s right, it sure does make me soooo happy!

  2. I like infographics, so much fun, funny, interesting and educational stuff could be found there!
To let you know, I trained my son potty-going since he was 3-months-old.
By 12-months, he was going potty on his own. By 18-months, he was trained for the night as well.
    How I did it?
Simple. Allow your child to go to the bathroom when they’re babies approximately at the same time and create a sound to which they will be trained to go potty. Every time I pronounced that sound, my son would pee. I had another sound to which he went big time! lol
Any way, I had no problem with potty training. And I disagree with parents who allow their kids to stay in diapers till they’re 3 or 4 years-old. Try to put on one of those diapers and pee in it and stay in it for a few hours. How does that feel? That’s exactly what I mean. Very uncomfortable.
It’ll save you unnecessary skin irritation problems and money on diapers.
Thank you for the post, Sarah!

My little girl is the same way. She’ll get so busy playing that she completely forgets about anything else. :/

  9. I love the timer! My 2-year old daughter is obsessed with Mickey&Minnie Mouse. Unfortunately, she has yet to go pee-pee in the potty.

  10. I did the timer with my son and it worked so well. He didn’t have accidents often but could hold it all day if I didn’t make him go! My daughter (2) still wears pull-ups at night and we love that Minnie has been added instead of just all the princesses. Addie is a big Minnie fan!

  11. That timer is pretty awesome. Thanks for sharing. My daughter was potty trained completely about 2 months before her 3rd birthday. But maybe once ever month of two she will still have an accident (#1 of course) and it is when she is playing.
