Easy Cranberry Appetizer

When I first saw the ingredients in this easy cranberry appetizer, I wrinkled my nose and had a sour look on my face. I’m not a huge fan of horseradish sauce and didn’t think it would pair well with my beloved cranberries but surprisingly, it works extremely well.  This is now my go to recipe when I have to make a quick appetizer that has to feed a number of people.

Cranberry Appetizer

Ingredients:

  • 12 oz bag of fresh cranberries
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 3 tbsp horseradish sauce
  • 1 tbsp dijon mustard

Directions:

Combine the cranberries, sugars and water in a medium sized pot over medium-high heat.

Cook for 6-8 minutes or until all the cranberries pop and the sauce thickens.  Turn off the heat.

Add the dijon mustard and horseradish sauce.  Stir well.  Let cool.

You may be thinking that 3 tablespoons of horseradish sauce is waaay too much.  Trust me, I thought the same thing and it truly isn’t.  This sauce has a little zip but nothing you can’t handle.  I’m not a huge fan of overly spicy, hot food and I love this.  I like to spread some whipped cream cheese on a Carr’s cracker and spoon a little of the cranberry sauce on top.  Whatever you do, don’t make these crackers up ahead of time because they’ll get soggy! Have your guests make them as needed.  They’ll taste better and it will save you time in the kitchen!

  9. That sounds really interesting. I like cranberry sauce and horseradish, but I have never thought of combining them. I wonder if this would work as a sandwich spread. I need to go up with some wraps!

  11. I love cranberries so I definitely want to try this recipe! Only thing is I have never seen horseradish sauce, maybe because I never looked for any. Is it something you can get at a regular grocery store?

    • You can find it in your grocery store’s condiment aisle. It’s always way up high in my grocery stores!

  17. This takes sweet & hot to a whole other level! I recently tasted a cranberry and brie phyllo log at an event catered by Gallucci’s (www.galluccis.com). This got me thinking about cranberry and cheese pairings that can be used either as fillings or toppings. I’m thinking about trying a cranberry and goat cheese bruschetta, or atop crostini. I wonder, can I substitute the horseradish with another hot ingredient, say chili flakes? And how long does this appetizer keep in the fridge, just in case it’s not consumed all in one sitting? If anyone has actually made it and tried it, please share results and reviews.
