When I turned 39 on July 1st one of the goals I set for myself was to pay off debt. When I looked at my budget the first area I knew I had cut expenses was with my wireless service. I was paying over $130 for an unlimited talk, text and web plan which seemed absolutely ridiculous! I wanted the ability to stay connected with my family and friends but I wanted to do that at an affordable cost and luckily for me, I found the best wireless plan for the money, the Walmart Family Mobile plan.
Since I signed up for this plan, I’ve had a lot of changes in my life. My daughter and I moved to our own house (no more townhome living) and now I’m responsible for ALL the utilities. When we lived in our townhome, our landlord paid for the gas and water and we only paid for electric. That means we now have a very strict budget and that extra $85-90 each month that I’m saving on my wireless plan goes a long way. My goal is still to pay down my debt before I turn 40 (choke) but I’m not willing to sacrifice the ability to speak to my family and friends whenever I want. As we’re transitioning in our lives it’s now more important than ever for me to be able to speak or text with them without worrying about whether I am going over my minutes.
I will tell you, I was a bit skeptical about the $40 price. I paid 3x as much for the same type of service plan with my other carrier so I thought for sure that meant I would have to make sacrifices when it came to connectivity and quality of service. I also figured there would be hidden charges in my bill that fell outside of that $40 price point. To my surprise, when I looked at my first online bill, the only “other” charge I found was a charge that all wireless companies make their customers pay.
At first I was a bit frustrated with what I thought was the service but really, I believe the issues came from not really understanding my phone. There was one specific day I remember not getting any of my outgoing calls to go through and feeling a bit annoyed but after I rebooted my phone, it worked fine. Part of that frustration also came from moving from an iPhone to an Android based phone. So my recommendation if you are switching to the service, use a phone that you care comfortable with to make a fair comparison. There were a few dropped calls but honestly, I’ve had that will all carriers I’ve had. I mean, think about it, which plan would you choose? Dropped calls happen to everyone.
Now I don’t have to worry about going only making my calls after 9 pm or mobile to mobile. I can make all my personal and business calls whenever I want without spending a small fortune each month. My daughter can talk to her grandparents and uncles as much as she likes (or as much as a 3-year olds attention span can handle) and I chat with all my friends that are scattered across the country. We’re still unpacking boxes from our move but whenever we need a break, I grab my phone and we chat with our family. The perfect excuse for not putting away those last boxes.

Seriously, that’s a HUGE cut! My son is ready to be added to our plan and with 3 smartphones, I’m shopping around. Wonder how much it would cost with 3 *gulp*! Definitely need to do some serious shopping – since he’s constantly nagging me “I’m the ONLY one with a flip phone.” Sad truth – he is, and the “retro, hipster” argument is wearing thin. Real thin.

Well, I have 3 phones right now – he can have one of them in a few months.
He made me look yesterday. He fell down a mountain at camp… and somehow that led to a phone store. Can you say “sucker”? ‘Cause I can. To the tune of GalaxyS4. Ugghhh. (I resisted, so far)

WHOA! That is affordable. I’m going to check this out, my husband and I are paying a fortune for our current plan.
We are in the market right now for our teen and had no idea to look at Walmart, definitely a great option!
We’ve recently switched to this and are saving over 1/2 of what we were paying. It’s crazy to think what we could have been doing with all that money this whole time. Crazy, sad 😉

We really, really need this! I love reading the reviews!
we dont have wal-mart nearby but worth having someone drive me to one. I have to get my daughter her a phone and the option of adding her to my plan is not an option.
